The incident unfolded on Saturday evening aboard a train bound for Huntingdon at approximately 7:39 pm local time (3:39 pm ET).
British Transport Police released a statement saying: "We are currently responding to an incident on a train to Huntingdon where multiple people have been stabbed. Officers are in attendance alongside @CambsCops, and two people have been arrested."
'Like something from a film'
One witness described the chaotic scene as "horrific" with "blood everywhere," as frightened passengers sought refuge in bathrooms while the train erupted into "pure chaos."
"It was a terrible scene. It was like something from a film," the passenger told The Sun. "It didn't feel real and just sparked pure panic onboard."
Social media footage captured armed officers racing along the platform during and following the attack. Police presence was also visible outside the station.
All LNER services were immediately suspended while emergency services responded to the situation. The rail operator also cautioned travelers about potential delays of up to an hour and significant disruptions "until the end of the day."
The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that "multiple people" had been rushed to the hospital following a major incident.
A spokesperson detailed that numerous ambulances, tactical commanders, and its Hazardous Area Response Team were on site in a "large-scale response."
Air ambulances from the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were also present at the scene.
"We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to the hospital," the air ambulances stated.
Prime Minister Starmer describes stabbing as 'deeply concerning'
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement following the incident, describing the situation as "appalling" and "deeply concerning."
"My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response," Starmer said. "Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police."
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the incident "seems to be a brutal mass attack."
"My thoughts are with all those injured or affected and the emergency services responding," Philp added. "The police and government should provide an update on what happened and who has been arrested as soon as possible."
