Iconic 169-year-old retailer is closing over 30 stores after tariff stress
The Orvis Company, one of the nation’s oldest outdoor retailers, is set to shutter over two dozen stores by 2026 amid what many are calling a "retail apocalypse"
Amid a time many have deemed as a retail apocalypse, The Orvis Company, one of the nation’s oldest outdoor retailers, is slated to shutter more than two dozen stores by 2026.
Orvis President Simon Perkins confirmed in a statement that 31 stores and five outlets will close their doors as the company begins a "new chapter" with a "more focused retail store portfolio."
This news comes after Macy's, another large-scale retailer, also announced closures. Orvis is associated with over 500 domestic independent dealers and multiple national outdoor retailers. The company is headquartered in Sunderland, Vermont, and was founded in 1856.
"Like many in retail, Orvis’ business model faced a sizable shift with the introduction of an unprecedented tariff landscape," Perkins explained. He added that the company is "focusing on our core strengths and making the difficult but necessary decision to rescale the business by tightening our assortment and reducing our corporate store footprint."
The future of Orvis
Perkins stated that this move was also about streamlining the company's operations.
"It’s about ensuring Orvis continues to lead in innovation, serve our angling and upland communities, and protect the wild places we love," he said.
The company aims to phase out older products and invest in areas where growth seems plausible—such as gear, apparel, outdoor experiences, and conservation efforts.
“Since 1856, Orvis has inspired generations of adventure in the field and on the water," Perkins said.
"Guided by that same purpose, we are entering an exciting new chapter by returning to our roots and sharpening our focus on the pursuits at the heart of our heritage: fly fishing and wingshooting."
A special savings offer at closing locations
Orvis will offer a special savings on "Last Release" styles that will not return once sold, along with other discounts at closing store locations, FOX Business reported.
The company currently has over 70 retail locations across the U.S. including 64 stores and seven outlets, and will end up with a national footprint of 33 stores and two outlets, RetailDive reported.
