Mommy influencer sparks baby name debate as commenters say she will be 'sued'
Family influencers Aubree and Josh Jones chose a name for their newest baby that some said could get her sued in the future
Family influencers Aubree and Josh Jones are having to explain themselves over the name of their seventh baby.
When it comes to choosing a name for your child, several factors come into play. Sometimes people want to choose a name that will be unique, while others follow the current trends of the time. When you have a big family, like the Joneses, it may just be whatever name everyone can finally agree on.
Josh and Aubree are both on Instagram with a combined 1.5 million followers. They share family content, like daily routines, pregnancy videos and parenting tips featuring their many children.
Aubree and Josh Jones’ new baby
Aubree just recently gave birth to her seventh baby, and she’s been teasing her name for weeks. She finally revealed the name Wednesday, and it’s Disney Mae Jones.
Josh told Today: “It represents persistence, innovation, imagination, family, magic, joy, taking chances and going all in on your dreams. Her name is Disney Mae Jones!”
Some people thought it was cute, with commenters saying, "Welcome to the world Disney!" But it also sparked debate, as some teachers said the name could get the little girl bullied one day.
One commenter said, “As a teacher… she’s going to get made fun of by her peers. we do the best we can to stop it. But we can’t police every aspect of their day.”
“Oh come on! Disney?? That poor baby,” another said.
A third added: “That is a different name. But shes going to get made fun of for that name when she gets older. Poor girl.”
Some wondered if the name could get her into trouble in the future, as it is likely copyrighted by the media conglomerate.
“I wonder how many of your kids are going to end up changing their names when they're adults, this one definitely will... unless Disney sues you first, they tend to do things like that,” one person said.
Another joked: “You’ve inspired me, gonna name my kid HBO.”
Can someone be sued for copyright over a name?
Copyright law doesn’t cover names, according to the U.S. Copyright Office. That means while you can’t copyright your name, you also can’t get in trouble for being named after a brand. Little Disney likely won’t be sued in the future.
You may run into trouble with certain documentation, however. Becky and Christian Mowbray told Suffolk News in 2024 that their child, named after Marvel and Star Wars characters, had trouble getting a passport.
The couple named their baby Loki Skywalker, and when they tried to get him a passport, the Home Office denied their request.
Since Disney owned the copyright to the name Skywalker, the office couldn’t print the name. In order to get the document, they either had to get permission from Disney or change the name entirely.
“We were not aware that this could be a potential issue,” Christian Mowbray previously said. “We understand that Loki's middle name is copyrighted, but we have no intention of using it for personal gain.”
