SNL fans can't get over 'best' cold open in weeks as show mocks NYC mayoral debate

Saturday Night Live fans raved over the cold open after the show poked fun at the mayoral candidates in New York City: Andrew Cuomo, Zohran Mamdani, and Curtis Sliwa

Saturday Night Live's cold open on November 1 heavily mocked New York City's mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo, Zohran Mamdani, and Curtis Sliwa.

Returning celebrity guest host, Miles Teller, took on impersonating former New York Governor Cuomo, portraying him as a straight-to-the-point contender who's riding on his previous experience as governor. Meanwhile, comedian Ramy Youssef played Mamdani to be comically ultra-liberal and empathetic to the plight of New Yorkers, and fellow funny man Shane Gillis showed Sliva to be a super tough guy who survived extremely eccentric situations.

SNL fans who tuned in this Saturday thought the show did a great job of parodying a fictional election between Sliwa, Cuomo, and Mamdani that was still very NYC-coded, after the real life trio's actual debate.

"I love when SNL leans into NYC jokes, I can’t help it #SNL," one wrote on X, formerly Twitter, as another added, "Wonderful to see the great @errollouis @ny1 impersonated on #SNL cold open as 'the least person ever impersonated...'"

Another added, "This cold open is promising tonight #SNL," while another raved: "IF YOU KNOW YOU … #SNL may have just dropped the best end your life joke. Ever. Also 'boo, relax nerd' is also my take on Zohran Mamdani. This was an extremely NYC but good cold open, hey write what you know."

Someone else shared, "LOL. Who would have guessed that a fictional debate with the 3 New York mayoral candidates would be funny to non-New Yorkers? Well done @nbcsnl. Hilarious cold open. #SNL."

While many held the cold open in high regard, some were annoyed when "President Donald Trump," who James Austin James is impersonating on SNL this season, interrupted the fake debate.

Many would've preferred if the cold open's skit excluded JAJ's Trump, with one X user writing, "That #SNL Cold Open was pretty decent until dude showed up," including a clip of Trump sliding in the scene.

A second agreed, "Can we have ONE cold open without this f- -king guy?! #SNL," referring to the faux Trump.

The cold open seemed to be teasing the final debate between the Big Apple's mayoral candidates that happened late last month ahead of NYC's mayoral election on November 4.

The Mirror US reported that it got heated between Mamdani, Sliwa, and Cuomo in their last debate as the latter, who's now running as an independent, Democratic nominee Mamdani, and Republican nominee Sliwa intensely debated Mamdani's ideology.

In a radio interview over week ago Cuomo said, “A vote for Curtis is a vote for Mamdani,” acknowledging that “it’s harder mathematically” for him to win with Sliwa also in the race.

“Republicans believe Mamdani is an existential threat,” Cuomo added. “Then you do what you need to do to stop the existential threat.”
