A hybrid animated live-action Hello Kitty movie is in the works with New Line and Warner Bros at the helm set for theatrical release on July 21, 2028 and fans cannot wait
Hello Kitty is set to make her big-screen debut in 2028.
After years of development, New Line and Warner Bros Pictures Animation have confirmed via Instagram that the Hello Kitty movie is set to release on July 21, 2028. Details regarding the cast, director, and other aspects have not yet been confirmed by the production company.
Hello Kitty is one of the most recognized characters in the world, generating billions from licensed merchandise since her creation in 1974 in Japan. Fans of the cartoon cat flooded the comments on the Instagram announcement, expressing their excitement over the upcoming animated project.
While details are sparse, the movie is rumored to be an animated/live-action hybrid and has reportedly been in development for years, first announced in 2021.
While there have been multiple animated series, films, books, and video games geared mainly toward children, this will be Hello Kitty's first full-length feature film.
Fans are elated for their favorite kitty to make her Hollywood debut. One fan wrote, "OMG??? I’M ALREADY SEATED FOR THIS!!!" while another celebrated, "HELLO KITTY MOVIE COMING OUT IN 2028 YAYAYAY"
Another Hello Kitty lover commented, "I begged for a Hello Kitty movie and next thing you know, something or someone answered my calling."
One added, "The way I’m going to cry I was obsessed with Hello Kitty when I was younger and we didn’t have as much toys, teddies and objects as there are now."
Others felt it was a long time coming, considering the number of animated characters who have made it to the big screen, with comments like "took em long enough" and "This is gonna make bank." I'm surprised it took this long to happen.
"Wait WHAT?! A HELLO KITTY MOVIE ?! YESSSSSSSSSS!!! LETS F-----G GOOOOOOOO!!!" one excited fan wrote, as another echoed, "We are WINNING."
Hello Kitty was created in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu and is currently designed by Yuko Yamaguchi. The Japanese company Sanrio owns her likeness.
Her first appearance on merchandise was in 1975, with a vinyl coin purse, and she has since become a globally recognized character, which Sanrio has said is a symbol of friendship.
The Sanrio universe features several cute characters, like Keroppi, My Melody, Kuromi, Chococat, Badtz-Maru, Tuxedo Sam, Cinnamoroll, and Pompompurin, among others, who may also appear in the movie alongside their feline friend.
