Therapist details why power couples like Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau fascinate us
Licensed therapist Esin Pinarli has broken down Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau's relationship from the perspective of a therapist, commenting on why they continue to fascinate their fans
When Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began appearing together publicly, their pairing sparked widespread attention and prompted mental health professionals to examine the unique pressures facing celebrity couples.
Licensed therapist Esin Pinarli says relationships between prominent figures provide insight into how fame amplifies common relationship challenges, including codependence and identity struggles.
"When two high-profile people fall in love, the relationship becomes a mirror of how each partner handles attention, shame, and boundaries," Pinarli tells The Mirror US. "It's easy to lose yourself in the collective 'brand' of the couple, especially when your careers are built on performance and image. What starts as passion can turn into emotional exhaustion if authenticity isn't protected." This follows Perry addressing her relationship on stage.
The couple's relationship began in July when they were photographed dining at Le Violon in Montréal.
Sources indicated Trudeau, who had been single following his 2023 separation from Sophie Grégoire after 18 years of marriage.
"He likes her personality, and they are two people who really enjoy chatting about different topics, and they click very well so far, as they are going to see each other again very soon," a source told The Sun at the time.
"He is feeling that talking to her and getting to know her is very refreshing, like a breath of fresh air in his life," the source continued.
"He was happy to connect with her so well, and that she appreciates him being a normal, respectful person who was very understanding of her recent separation from Orlando Bloom."
Their first official public outing occurred October 25 at Crazy Horse Paris, where they attended a cabaret performance celebrating Perry's 41st birthday.
Photographs showed the pair walking hand-in-hand, exchanging affectionate looks.
During an October concert at London's O2 arena, Perry made a playful reference to the relationship while addressing the crowd.
"London, England, you're like this on a Monday night after a whole day at work and a whole day at school?" Perry told the audience, according to the Sun.
"No wonder I fall for Englishmen all the time… but not anymore," she quipped.
When a fan staged a surprise marriage proposal during the show, Perry laughingly responded, "I wish you'd asked me 48 hours ago."
The couple was also photographed displaying affection aboard Perry's yacht off Santa Barbara's coast.
Perry ended her decade-long relationship with actor Orlando Bloom in July, while Trudeau stepped down as prime minister earlier this year.
"They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes," a source told People in August.
"She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common."
