Meghana Sajjanar wins air rifle bronze

Meghana Sajjanar shot a remarkable final to clinch the bronze in women’s air rifle in the World Cup in Ningbo, China, on Sunday.

After qualifying in the seventh place with 632.6, Meghana rose to the third place behind Peng Xinlu of China and Jeanette-Hegg Duestad of Norway.

The second medal for India after the gold by Esha Singh in women’s air pistol the previous day, put the team tied fifth in the medals table along with Italy.

China topped the table with three gold, four silver and a bronze ahead of Norway which had two gold, a silver and a bronze. While Korea and Czech Republic placed third and fourth, Germany was the other team to win one of the 10 gold medals.

It was the maiden World Cup medal for the 31-year-old Meghana, who had been part of the team that won a medal in the World Championships.

The 16-year-old Peng Xinlu took everyone’s breath away by shooting a world record 255.3 in the final. She shot 637.4 in qualification and missed the world record, held by compatriot Wang Zifei, by 0.2 point.

In men’s rifle 3-position event, Kiran Jadhav made the final with an impressive score of 590, but eventually placed eighth.
