ADHD affects around 4% to 9% of women, but it’s often missed or diagnosed much later in life compared to men. A 2023 report published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that more than half of people with ADHD received diagnoses as adults and that more than half of these people were women.

It’s a common story for women to receive later-in-life diagnoses because they tend to exhibit symptoms that are often mistaken for other conditions, like depression and anxiety, rather than ADHD—think scattered thoughts, constantly feeling overwhelmed and limited follow-through rather than the hyperactivity and fidgeting we tend to associate with the condition.

As a result, many women spend years searching for answers, wondering what’s wrong with them and trying to mask their symptoms. Additionally, Shanna Pearson, ADHD coach and author of the upcoming book Invisible ADHD, told Flow Space in a recent interview that more women in midlife are being diagnosed with ADHD than ever before and that perimenopause and menopause can make symptoms worse.

While ADHD is a common diagnosis, it’s often misunderstood and rarely discussed openly, which can make those who have it feel isolated and othered. Part of why that’s changing is thanks to more public figures, including celebrities, sharing their diagnoses. Take a look at these 14 celebs with ADHD who are helping to break the stigma.
