Anyone who has had a bout of skin cancer, or melanoma, is far from alone: It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. And among people over 50, the rates tend to increase by 3% for women specifically, per American Cancer Society data.

The good news about melanoma—if there is any—is that there’s a 99% survival rate with early detection. On top of that, wearing sunscreen can exponentially decrease your risk of melanoma.

That’s why it’s helpful when anyone who’s been through skin cancer, especially those with huge platforms, shares their experiences—like the mole they almost missed, what happen when they got a skin check or how to take preventative measures against skin cancer recurrences. Here are some celebrities who have been open about their skin cancer stories.
