What to Look for in Boots if You Need Arch Support

When looking for boots with arch support, it’s important to focus on key features that ensure comfort and foot health. Opt for boots with contoured footbeds that follow the natural shape of your foot, providing essential support.

“Boots with arch support can improve your posture, reduce foot fatigue, and protect against injury,” says Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry, DPM, FACFAS, podiatrist. “For comfort and support all day long, arch support is crucial so finding a boot with a supportive insole that is removable (to either update as it wears down or replace with a custom orthotic) makes for a more customized feel and offer excellent support overall.”

Dr. Daughtry explains that ,along those lines, adequate cushioning typically goes hand in hand with arch support to assist with shock absorption. This makes all the difference in reducing stress on the arch, absorbing impact, and assisting with overall foot comfort.

Ahead, here’s a quick list of what to look for while shopping.

  • Materials: Dr. Daughtry says that the upper is essential for comfortable and supportive boots. “Boots with more breathable and natural materials such as leather, suede, or mesh which will conform or stretch to ensure that the boot has a snug fit that provides adequate support without being constrictive.”
  • Heel height: Consider the heel height when shopping for a new pair of boots this fall. Dr. Daughtry recommends seeking ones with a moderate height of one to two inches. This height is ideal for optimal arch support. Plus, a moderate heel strikes a balance between fashion and function.
  • Adjustable closure systems: “Boots with adjustable closure systems like laces or straps allow for the fit to adjust to your needs and achieve a more comfortable and supportive fit while also allowing for any swelling throughout the day,” Dr. Daughtry explains. “”Lace-up style boots are easier to allow for additional arch support and to add orthotics to, especially in taller boots.”

What to Avoid in Boots if You Need Arch Support

If you need arch support, experts advise avoiding any flat-soled boot or boot that has a narrow heel should be avoided.

Which Boots Are Best if You Have Plantar Fasciitis?

If you have plantar fasciitis, the best boots will provide strong arch support, cushioning and stability to relieve foot pain and reduce strain on your plantar fascia. Look for boots with built-in arch support or orthotic-friendly designs to help align your feet properly and reduce heel pressure. Luckily, many now offer adequate (or the ability to add) insoles or custom orthotics for additional arch support and shock absorption.

“The main treatment for plantar fasciitis is some type of additional arch support,” Dr. Daughtry explains. “So if the boot has a decent heel cup, excellent arch support, and a slight heel height, then the boot should help treat and prevent a flare-up of plantar fasciitis.”
