San Martin Blvd Over Riviera Bay Bridge Forcemain & Watermain Relocate
San Martin Blvd Over Riviera Bay Bridge Forcemain & Watermain Relocation Project
Project Overview
The City of St. Petersburg is relocating vital underground utilities near the San Martin Bridge to improve long-term reliability, strengthen storm resilience, and protect local waterways. This work includes relocating a 24-inch sanitary force main and a 12-inch watermain.
This relocation is required due to Pinellas County’s upcoming replacement of the San Martin Bridge over Riviera Bay, which will improve clearance for boat traffic. Since the City’s utilities are currently attached to the bridge, they must be relocated before construction begins.
To minimize disruption to the bay and surrounding neighborhood, the City will use horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath Riviera Bay. Additional pipe segments will be installed by open trenching within the public right-of-way along San Martin Boulevard, from Tallahassee Drive to Weedon Drive.
Public Impact
This project will require temporary changes to traffic patterns on and around the San Martin Bridge. To complete the utility relocation safely and efficiently, traffic will be reduced to one lane across the bridge. Temporary traffic signals will be installed to alternate the flow of vehicles in both directions.
Phase 1 of construction will close the southbound travel lane, while Phase 2 will close the northbound lane. Throughout the project, access to homes and driveways will be maintained at all times.
The City understands the inconvenience that construction can cause and is committed to minimizing disruptions, ensuring safety, and keeping the community informed.
