Rotten Tomatoes: History & Evolution
Rotten Tomatoes was launched in 1998 as a website to aggregate film reviews from various critics in the US. It was created by Senh Duong as a fan site to collect reviews of Jackie Chan films. The site gained popularity through word of mouth, receiving mentions from Netscape, Yahoo, and USA Today within its first week. Duong later teamed up with partners to pursue the site full-time. Rotten Tomatoes has changed ownership multiple times over the years, being acquired by companies like IGN Entertainment, News Corp, Flixster, and ultimately Comcast's Fandango Media in 2016. The site has also expanded its coverage beyond just films to include television shows.
