Team Scotland went undefeated in group A posting an impressive eight successive wins, including those over neighbours England and Wales. Coming into their last game, Scotland knew that a win over Turkey would see them seal top spot and a direct place to the quarter finals. The Scots started strongly making good use of hammer and were 4-1 up after 3 ends. Steals of a single point in each of the next three ends saw handshakes and with a final score of 7-1, first place in their group was achieved.

Canada beat Slovenia in the last 16 to set up their quarter final clash with Scotland. Things started well for the Canadians who stole three ends to take a 3-0 lead. Scotland however finished strongly take two in the 8th end to force an extra. Despite an excellent final shot from skip, Robin Brydone, the Canadians responded with an excellent runback to take the game and to dash Scotland’s hopes. Canada went on to beat Spain in the final 6-2 and Russia took the bronze medal edging Norway 8-7.

Skill Awards Challenge
20th October 2018, Curl Aberdeen, Aberdeen

Saturday 20th of October saw 9 Teams from all over Scotland gather at Curl Aberdeen for the annual Scottish Curling Skill Awards Challenge. All enjoyed a fun day packed with competitive curling.  The teams played four drawn games to try and place as high as possible on the overall ladder, from there the two top teams faced off for the overall top prize in the final and the teams ranked third and fourth battled for third place.

After the drawn games, it was Forfar Young Curlers 1 who took on Kinross Juniors for third place. With great shots made from both teams it was the rink coming out of Forfar that managed to claim the win.

In the final it was Forfar Young Curlers other team who finished the ladder stage on three wins and a draw taking on the only team with a perfect win record, Perth Juniors. The Perth rink carried this momentum into the final with a score of 3 in the first end. They continued to apply pressure with Forfar’s Skip Ross Craik having to make a clutch angled tap against three to keep the Forfar rink in the game. However end three saw Perth’s rink skipped by Harry Gow make a well earned two putting them in control going down the last end with a 4 shot lead and went on to run the Forfar team out of stones in the final end and claimed the victory!

Three Scottish Curling Academy teams travelled to Oslo in Norway to take part in one leg of the European Junior Curling Tour; Team Kinnear, Team Amy Bryce and Team Farmer. This provided a great benchmark for all the teams against some World Junior Championship rivals. Team Kinnear went through their group undefeated but fell in the quarter finals. There was slightly more success for the girl’s as Team Bryce finished as runners up and Team Farmer finished in 4th place. Performance Development Coach, David Ramsay, reflected on a productive weekend: “Our teams showed their mettle and in fact, are not far away from their world rivals. All teams enjoyed a great weekend with fantastic hosts, who remarked with admiration about our Academy setup.”
