A German History
Schloss Elmau was built between 1914 and 1916 by the philosopher Dr. Johannes Müller as a retreat to experience nature, tranquility and classical music in concerts, and dance nights After a major fire destroyed the landmark castle in 2005, Schloss Elmau was rebuilt by his grandson, Dietmar Mueller-Elmau, from 2007-2015 as a Luxury Spa Retreat & Cultural Hideaway for cosmopolitans. Besides classical music in concerts and festivals with the great artists of our time, Jazz, literary events, and political debates focusing on the history of ideas of liberty and its enemies, have since become part of the unique cultural program. In 2015, and again in 2022, Schloss Elmau has hosted two G7 Summits, which Angela Merkel redefined in Elmau as a summit of wealthy democracies committed to defending liberty.
