The World Rally Championship (WRC) has been held since 1973 and is the highest FIA championship in stage rallying. It is also often referred to as the top class of rallying. The calendar includes rallies around the globe, but the focus of the WRC is on Europe, where most WRC rallies are held. WRCs - World Rally Cars - are used as vehicles. These rally cars are built according to a set of regulations specifically for the World Rally Championship. Officially, the vehicle class is called Rally1. They have all-wheel drive, without an active centre differential (since 2022), a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder turbo engine, whose power is limited to 380 hp and 450Nm torque. From the 2022 season, the vehicles will also have a standard hybrid system (100kw). A 5-speed sequential gearbox with a mechanical gear stick is used as transmission. Cars also have a roll cage and steel brakes. The total length of all timed special stages (SS) of a WRC rally must be at least 300km. No minimum or maximum length is prescribed for a single stage. However, a special stage may only be held a maximum of 2 times per rally, with the exception of particular spectator stages which are also known as Super Special Stages (SSS). The last special stage of a rally is held as a so-called power stage, where the fastest teams can win extra points for the championship.
