Review

Prisoners who have been serving long sentences are likely to feel unmoored upon their release, but for Daniel Brennan (Matthew Gurney), that sense of dislocation is heightened due to his being deaf. Thanks to the serious nature of the crime for which he was convicted, Daniel is a pariah within the community of those with hearing loss, but unable to mesh too with the world at large, his sole relationship being the one he’s attempting to build with estranged daughter Carly (Lara Peake).

Their fragile bond forms the spine of the opening episode of this unusual Sheffield-set revenge thriller, which demands attention not just because of its general air of foreboding, but also for the fact that it’s bilingual, featuring as it does a mix of spoken English and British Sign Language.
