The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is committed to promoting universal and equitable access to the highest quality care for all people affected by mental disorders, including substance use disorders. The Division of Diversity and Health Equity (DDHE) within the APA supports its members and the patients they serve through community outreach and engagement activities, as well as education and training programs that foster culturally responsive care, improved patient safety, and mental health outcomes.

APA Psychiatry Workforce Development Programs

The APA Psychiatry Workforce Development Programs are supported by grant funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The APA has received support for the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program since its inception in 1974 and has trained over 1,020 leaders in psychiatry.
