A Small Area of the Brain May Be Associated with Schizophrenia Risk, New Research Finds
New research published online in the American Journal of Psychiatry provides new molecular insights into the role of the habenula, a pea-sized brain region that helps regulate motivation and mood, in contributing to the risk of schizophrenia. A team of researchers at Lieber Institute for Brain Development and Johns Hopkins found that many schizophrenia-related molecular changes appear to be specific to this region, suggesting the habenula could be a potential target for future treatments.

Justin Singh Joins American Psychiatric Association as Senior Vice President, Operations, Finance, and Transformation
Today the American Psychiatric Association (APA) announced that Justin Singh, M.B.A., has joined as its new senior vice president of operations, finance, and transformation. In this senior leadership role, reporting to the CEO and Medical Director, Justin will oversee many of the daily operations of the association and establish our technology and innovation agenda. He will also facilitate the roll-out of our newly approved strategic plan, “A Vision For Our Future: PSYCHIATRY2030,” which emphasizes three key areas for APA: medical leadership, member success, and organizational strength.
Are Americans Aware of Kratom? New Poll Says No
In recent months, news stories have covered the harms of kratom, the FDA has taken steps toward banning certain forms of it, some states are considering outlawing it, and the FDA commissioner sent a warning letter about the substance to clinicians. A new poll from the American Psychiatric Association finds only 19% of Americans are familiar with this dangerous substance, sometimes referred to as “gas station heroin.”

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the American Psychiatric Association Foundation has released a Spanish-language translation of its resource guide, Mental Health: A Guide for Faith Leaders (Salud Mental: Una GuĂa Para LĂderes Religiosos). The resource guide provides faith leaders with the insights and tools to understand mental health concerns and support congregants with mental health challenges.
