State Disability Insurance (SDI)

California State Disability Insurance (SDI) covers employees for non-work-related illness or injury. The cost of this benefit is paid by the employee. Eligibility and coverage varies by employee group.

When do I qualify?

PPEO and DDAA Represented Employees

You must be disabled for seven calendar days before SDI benefits begin. Apply as soon as you know you will be out longer than seven days.

You can coordinate sick leave with SDI so that together they equal your regular take-home pay. To do this:

  1. Notify your department supervisor and payroll staff immediately.
  2. Submit a completed SDI Integration form.

Until you do both, sick leave and vacation hours will be used to calculate your pay. If you choose to integrate sick leave with SDI at a later date, retroactive benefits may not be available.

Once sick leave is exhausted, you may use vacation, floating holiday, or compensatory time off (CTO) accruals with your department head's approval.

SDI coverage is limited to one year and is administered by the California Employment Development Department (EDD). If you have a pending Workers' Compensation claim, you should also file for SDI. For other benefit options, contact the Personnel Department at 530-889-4060.

Note: Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), California Family Rights Act (CFRA), and Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) normally run concurrently with a Workers' Compensation leave.

DSA Represented Employees

SDI is not available. FMLA does not run concurrently with 4850 benefits. FMLA, CFRA, and PDL leaves normally run concurrently with a Workers' Compensation leave.

Confidential, Management, Safety Management and PC LEMA Represented Employees

SDI is not available. Depending on the length of your medical leave, you may be eligible for the County-sponsored Salary Protection Program.
