Maasina Fulfulde is a member of the West Central Fula group of Senegambian languages. It is spoken by about 4.6 million people mainly in Mali, where it is an official language, and also Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Maasina Fulfulde is named after the Masina area in central Mali. This area is also known as Macina or Inner Niger Delta, and the language is also known as Fulfulde, Macina, Maasina Fula, or Maasinankoore. There are two main dialects: Western Macina and Eastern Macina.
Maasina Fulfulde has been written with the Arabic script since the 12th century. A way to write it with the Latin script was devised during the 20th century, and standardized in 1967. The Arabic script for Maasina Fulfulde currently in use was standardized in 1987.
