Three-on-three ice hockey is a smaller version of the traditional sport. It has never been on the Olympic Programme, but it débuted on the programme of the Youth Winter Olympics at Lausanne 2020, with events for boys and girls.
As the traditional ice hockey sport, this discipline is also governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which was founded on 15 May 1908 as the Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG). The federation would adopt its current English name in 1954. As of January 2026, the IIHF has 84 member national associations (61 full members and 23 associate members). An Ultimate Hockey League overseen by the IIHF for professional 3x3 players is expected to be held internationally in 2028.
