24 tracks in a row going down inside the top 40. It feels like that hasn't happened for a long time!

we need more experimental music.

Listen to pacific 202 on you tube it just sounds free

2025 has been so underwhelming, and with the exception of 2022 its been like the noughties again, a few good acts and very little else. When i was a teen i liked dance music because it was one of the very few areas that flourished.

I graduated to radio 2 when I was 27 a decade ago, I gradually got sick of radio 1`s repetitive airplay.

909 drum/bass lines, violins, horns, piano stabs, raw female vocals, thats the kind of music I like.

My most listened song this week is Rather be by clean bandit and jess glynne its hard to think thats more than 10 years old now.

I didn`t like tate mcray because i hate the sound of heavily auto tuned female vocals. i want some loud, unprocessed female vocals ok?

But you don't mind it one bit when the artist is male and the processing is even more prominent.

Questions:

1. How do some songs get listed as re-entries when they've never been in the chart before? Happens a lot in the sales chart

2. Taylor Swift put 19 of her last album's tracks in the sales chart but none from the new one have charted. Why?

Just an old-timer trying to understand new chart rules! :-)

Fave song right now - Spiders by Lola Young. Raw, vulnerable and all the better for being that way.

1) It’s hard to say, OCC just messes up sometimes. However in the case of year end lists, songs that placed in the top 200 of the year end in a previous year count as re-entries if they make the top 100 for the first time. Similarly with the independent singles/albums charts, this website only publishes the top 50 of both charts but they’re actually top 100s which I believe you can find on Music Week (its like £100 a year though)

2) None of the tracks from The Life of a Showgirl were able to purchase separately on iTunes for the whole week. The Fate of Ophelia has since been released onto iTunes though (and it is currently #1 there).

Also yes, I love Spiders!! I loved the album as a whole but that was definitely my favourite song on it :)

Hope this at least provided a little more insight 😅

I can also say that, in the case of the midweek update, songs that have charted on the final chart that haven't yet debuted on the midweek update, get listed as re-entries when they debut there. I have no idea what they're trying to do with that.

I have also found that the number of weeks listed on some of the auxiliary charts (such as the sales chart) are completely unreliable, you have to click on the information button to see the full chart run where the correct number of charting weeks is listed. the correct number is often much lower so I can only imagine they're erroneously combining weeks across multiple different charts, it's a disaster.

when a song is re-released under a different record label, it is often given a different entry in the database. in general, when it comes to re-releases and remixes, the OCC is just really inconsistent. it's always worth checking the archive to see if there's a different version of the same song that has been given a different entry, whether it be on the same chart or across multiple charts.

I could go on for ages about all the problems with the OCC's system, but those are the most relevant points.

Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it. It took me a while to see that re-entries had often not been on the chart before. Thanks for the explanations.

I saw Lola Young live in Nottingham before the album came out and Spiders was a standout then, sounding so raw and emotional and I was worried when listening to the album it wouldn't pack the same punch, but it so does.

If OCC are consistent with the permanent ACR rule, next week Escapism. will officially be moved onto it (it turns 3 years old on Sunday). Such an incredible song that completely changed RAYE’s life and I’m so glad it was at least able to have a short resurgence just before it gets affected by perma ACR.

Not related to the chart but it’s such a shame that MTV are shutting down all of their UK music channels by the end of the year.

The television viewing figures were still good and it was a platform that launched so many careers. I remember always watching the music videos on it after school so it feels like a part of my childhood is gone too. Also, why relaunch some of the channels earlier this year only to close them down after several months?

Such a bad move from Paramount…

avatar

macie

1

because Paramount/Viacom s*ck (why is this censored 💀) unfortunately. They’ve always been a terrible company

avatar

strangeways_here_we_come

2

Just found about this now im absolutely devastated. There's always MTV on in the pubs so that makes me sad

avatar

Piran

1

It also helped me to rediscover lots of 80s and 90s classics. It'll be sorely missed.

H

Hennessy

1

So its now a complete removal of all music channels. Already lost loads. .

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, it seems like they're just going to air reality TV from now on despite the acronym literally meaning Music Television. Ridiculous.

P

pressy

1

TV channels keep going under left right and centre across all genres. every now and then I check TV listings just to see what other channels are set to be axed, it's a bloodbath. streaming feels far more impersonal, I miss the feeling of community you would get from watching something live and knowing the nation was watching along.

I don't blame anyone for cutting cords given the exorbitant costs, so broadband companies do also have themselves to blame. but this is a symptom of a wider problem, I feel like people are more and more isolated and less connected and this feels like just one more manifestation of that. I try to watch live TV whenever I can, as it really is a matter of 'use it or lose it' and I can hardly complain if I haven't been voting with my feet. but it hardly seems to matter when some of my favourite channels go under despite my consistent viewership. me and my brother actually watched the final broadcast of Kerrang! together and it was devastating, and I also loved the TCM movie channel, as one of the very few free movie channels and one of pretty much only a couple that don't just air terrible Hallmark movies.

like many others I grew up watching live TV, music channels in particular, and it really is a husk of what it once was. it feels like things are only getting worse across the board when it comes to the social fabric, I hardly think it's sustainable. things will get worse before they get better, so hopefully there are better times ahead, and not just an interminable death spiral

avatar

Piran

2

My worry is that TVs are going to be phased out of operation entirely as more channels are taken off air. Either that or we're only going to be left with the main ones such as BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that RAYE has another song in the Great Tier for me. I also noticed that ‘Suzanne’ re-entered today. Definitely wouldn’t mind this getting a second chart run either.

Speaking of songs that are growing on me with every listen, I’m starting to get why ‘So Easy’ is set to be Olivia Dean’s next hit. It makes me feel really warm inside. :)

Sad to see ‘Gorgeous’ take such a big drop this week but at least it took ‘Stay’ out with it.

3

Surprised that ‘Folded’ appears to have stalled out. I was hoping to see it become Kehlani’s first Top 20 single. At least they got their highest charting entry to date with it whatever happens.

I can’t say I’m impressed with the continued rise of ‘Make Me Feel’. It’s so bland and forgettable.

avatar

Piran

3

I hate to say this, but as someone who adored ‘Midnights’ and didn’t mind ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ despite all the backlash it got, ‘The Life Of Showgirl’ is one of Taylor’s weakest albums to date.

I’m not against her going for a retro and happy vibe with this era but I don’t think the sound matched the aesthetic and there are certainly consistent issues with the writing. Also, it may be partly down to overexposure, but a lot of songs either aren’t that memorable or sound like B-sides from her other projects. Sadly, 2025 just seems to be the year of major pop acts releasing okay but underwhelming albums. I’ll personally stick with the PinkPantheress remix album and Sofia Camara EP that came out today. Both of them are fantastic.

That being said, I’m absolutely fine with the Top 2. ‘The Fate Of Ophelia’ is a good lead single choice and I love the production on ‘Opalite'. Don’t get the hype for ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ though.
