A simple birthday dinner for a beloved pet turned into a viral moment, after a local Texas Roadhouse added a heartfelt touch to one customer’s order.

Angela, 43, from eastern Ohio, wanted to make her Golden Retriever Clifford’s fifth birthday extra special. After a fun shopping trip to Pet Supplies Plus, she decided to treat Clifford—and his canine sibling—to kids’ steaks from her local Texas Roadhouse.

“I called in the order and mentioned I wanted to get two kids’ steaks, one for each of my dogs, and that it was my dog Clifford’s birthday,” Angela, who didn’t give a surname, told Newsweek. “The lady taking the order didn’t say much, she just keyed it in and gave me the wait time.”

When Angela got home and opened the takeout bag, she found a surprise—the lid of Clifford’s meal container had a handwritten message: “Happy Birthday Clifford!! :)”

“It made me smile,” Angela said. “It was such a sweet gesture. I was already making a TikTok about Clifford’s birthday shopping day out, and this was just the perfect way to end his special day.”

Newsweek reached out to Texas Roadhouse via email for comment.

Can Dogs Eat Steak?

While steak can be given to dogs as a special treat, there are safety considerations to keep in mind.

According to the pet nutrition experts at PetMD, dogs can safely enjoy steak—but only if it is properly prepared. It should be cooked thoroughly and not raw, trimmed of excess fat, cut into bite-sized pieces appropriate for the dog’s size and free from dog toxins such as garlic, onion or excessive salt.

Bones should also be avoided because they can pose serious choking or intestinal-blockage risks.

Alongside the video, Angela explained that Clifford did not have any of the rice from the Roadhouse as it contained onion. Instead, she made them their own plain white rice.

Angela described her pets as “like her children,” adding that spoiling them is “a regular occurrence” in her home.

What she was not ready for was the response online as the TikTok video gained more than 1.2 million views.

“I don’t have much of a following,” Angela said. “So a video going viral wasn’t expected—but it’s exciting.”
