Newsweek has contacted the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, via email, for comment.

Why It Matters

Captured on numerous dashboard and security cameras, the celestial event quickly went viral on social media. While no damage or injuries have been reported, the unusual sight reignited public fascination with space phenomena and raised questions about planetary defense and atmospheric monitoring.

Though harmless in this instance, the event highlighted growing concerns about unidentified objects entering Earth’s atmosphere, particularly over major urban centers.

What To Know

The object appeared just before dawn on October 27, according to multiple people on social media.

It glowed intensely with an emerald hue and leaving a luminous trail before breaking apart in the atmosphere.

No official confirmation has yet been issued about the sighting.

Last year, a mysterious fireball was spotted breaking up in the sky over southern Russia.

Footage showing the unknown flying object was shared on social media by residents from several regions, including Stavropol Krai, the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Krasnodar Krai, and the Republic of Kalmykia. Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported that some residents believed it was a falling meteorite or comet, while others said they thought they had seen a satellite or an "enemy object."

Open Source Intel posted: “A bright green light streaked across Moscow’s sky early this morning, stunning residents. The glowing object quickly vanished. Possibly a meteor.”

What's Happens Next

In the absence of formal conclusions from Russian space or defense agencies, there is only video evidence and crowd-sourced observations.

The event may prompt fresh discussions within Russia and internationally about space monitoring systems and the importance of early detection of atmospheric entries.
