How US Rail Travelers Can Take A Friend For Free

Amtrak is running a limited-time "Twice as Nice" promotion that allows passengers booking a Roomette—a private room designed for relaxation and sleep on long-distance journeys—to bring a friend with them, free of charge.

Why it Matters

The Amtrak offer comes after more Americans used its services than ever before in 2024. The train company set its all-time ridership record for a fiscal year in December with more than 32.8 million passengers, up 15 per cent from 2023. It also reached record ticket revenue of $2.5billion, a 9 percent year-over-year increase. The company also invested $4.5billion in major infrastructure projects with board chair Tony Coscia hailing it an "exciting time for rail in America".

What To Know

Under the "Twice as Nice" sale, customers who book a Roomette on eligible Amtrak long-distance train journeys can bring a companion with them, for free, to enjoy the Roomette's facilities, including premium bedding, lounge access at major stations, priority boarding, a turndown service, complimentary meals, shower and restroom access, and luggage assistance.

To be eligible, customers will need to use the promo code C121 when booking their Roomette. Their companion must be on the same booking, and they must share the Roomette.

The offer applies to bookings made between October 21 and November 1, 2025, for journeys from November 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026, and covers popular journeys like the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, Texas Eagle, and Coast Starlight.

It’s worth noting that it doesn’t include the southbound Auto Train (from Virginia to Florida) and customers can't book for the following blackout dates during peak holiday travel periods: Nov 21 – Nov 25, 2025; Nov 28 – Nov. 30, 2025; Dec 18 – Dec. 22, 2025 and Dec 26, 2025 – Jan 3, 2026.
