Joe Adams: Keep Going By DAVID CLIMER Like so many of his passes, Joe Adams' transformation is complete. In less than a year, Adams has made the adjustment from just another strong-armed passer to a flesh-and-blood college quarterback. He has learned that there is more to his position than just 70-yard bombs and headlines in the newspaper. The realization of a deeper duty the need to be a leader has hit home with Adams. He no longer talks of completion percentage. Now Adams speaks calmly, confidently of leading the offense to touchdowns and of winning games, whether that duty is accomplished on the strength of his right arm or by calling signals and handing the ball off to a running back. He downplays the role of a passer. He now speaks-bf being a quarterback. "Sure I enjoy throwing the ball. I guess every quarterback likes to throw or he'd find another position," said Adams yesterday. "But more than that, I just like to win. I'll do whatever I have to do to win. If that means handing the ball off and 'using the running game all night, then that's what we'll do. "All the good stats in the world don't mean a thing if you don't win games." SO ADAMS, who did not start until the fourth game of his freshman season last year, is the key to the TSU offensive attack whicn will take the field Saturday night against Middle Tennessee in the opener. "I realize the improvements I've made since last year," he said. "You know, I didn't start for a few games and I learned a lot by the time I got out on the field. "But now I feel that I know the personnel and the system here. It's a great plus for myself and for the team." Middle Tennessee presents a specific problems for Adams and provides a test of his ability to adjust. "Well, basically we know they run the 4-3 defense," the quarterback said of Ben Hurt's Middle Tennessee team. "But we've been hearing rumors that they've switched to the 5-2 in some situations. We have films of last year's game but some of that isn't gonna help us if they've changed everything around on us. "We didn't do that much passing against them last year so we don't know about their pass coverage and their secondary. It's a situation where you just have to wait until the game starts and see how they play you. We'll make adjustments according to they way they line up. BUT ADAMS, suddenly turning secretive, said he isn't giving out any information on the TSU game plan. "We have good running backs this year, but I don't know if that alters our game plan. We can do a lot of things, both with our running game and with our passing game. There's been A lot said about how we don't have any good pass receivers, but I think we're getting better. "The key for us is balance, at least as far as offense goes. We've had some good gainers by our (Turn to Page 68)
