Brogden succeeds Caldwell July 11

Death of Gov. Caldwell. We regret to have to announce the death of the of North Carolina, Hon. Tod, R. CaldGovernor well, which occurred at Hillsboro on Saturday evening last. He went to Hillsboro on Thursday lust for the purpose of attending the N. C. Railroad meeting, was taken violently ill with cholera morand sank rapidly until Saturday eyening when bus he breathed his last. By this sad occurrence, the Hon. Curtis H. Brogden, the Lieutenant -Governor, becomes Governor of the State, and will serve out the unexpired term of Gov. Caldwell, two years from the 1st of next January. The Lieut. will be filled when the Legislature meets, next Fall and the Senate elects its President--the President of the Senate then elected taking the place vacated by Mr Brogden. Let the good people of the State give Gov. Brogden a fair and proper support in discharging the responsible duties suddenly devolved upon him, and act unitedly in promoting the best interests of the State and the peace and prosperity of all our people. Mr Brogden bas served in public life many years and is not a stranger to the duties of Governor. He is a North Carolinian by birth, and about 55 rears old.
