LONG ISLAND NEWS. Meeting of the King Manor Association of Long Island Held Yesterday, at the Manor in King Park, Jamaica--The Interior of the Mansion Has Been Decorated and It Is Ready Now for the Furnishings--Jamaica ca Women's Work, JAMAICA, L. I., Nov. 3.-A meeting of the King Manor Association of Long Island was held yesterday afternoon at the Manor in King Park, in this village. Mrs. Charles O'H. Craigie presided and Mrs. Henry A. Powell recorded the minutes. The entire afternoon was given up to business and the reports of the several committees. When the fact is made known that through the efforts of the House Committee all the rooms old house have been painted and papered, and necessary general repairing has been done, which has put the place in condition for furnishing, it is evident that considerable details of business relating thereto had to be considered at the meeting of yesterday, which was the first this year. The east room, fitted up by the Jamaica Women's Club, was the meeting place. This is quaintly grotesque, with its great open fireplace and new rag carpet, which is the handiwork of Jamaica women. The halls of the house are decorated in green and white, with a mahogany finish, | after colonial fashion, on doors and stair rails. The drawing room coloring is tan and white, and the library dark red. Mrs. Benjamin F. Stevens presented brass andirons, shovel and tongs, for the library; Mrs. Isaac H. Cary a rug, and Mrs. Craigie some picture tiles for the fireplace. When the work of furnishing is further advanced the house will be an ideal meeting place for club affairs, because there clings to it and the environment the repose which city assembly halls do not afford. The Long Island Society Daughters of the Revolution held a meeting at King Manor last Tuesday, and other applications have been made for the use of the house in November. Copies of the constitution of the association, its membership list, etc., were ready for distribution at yesterday's meeting. CASSIDY WORKING HARD. He and His Friends Spending Their Own Money, Too. Reward Offered by District Attorney Niemann for Information. MINEOLA, L. I., Nov. 3.-So many incendiary fires have occurred along the south side of Nassau County that District Attorney Niemann has been authorized by the owners of property destroyed 10 offer rewards for the apprehension of the firebugs evidence that will lead to their conviction. The first offer 15. one of $1.000 for information of the person or persons who set fire to the country mansion of -Senator Edward Floyd-Jones at Massapequa on the night of June 12. Two fires occurred on the property within a few nights of each other. One destroyed a small house on the premises and the other totally destroyed the large mansion, together with its contents of furniture, family plate and valuable paintings. The loss ran up into the thousands, but the Senator is willing to pay another thousand for the satisfaction of seeing the incendiary punished. REGRETS LOSING VOTE. The Fracturing of His Leg Didn't Worry Him So Much. HEMPSTEAD, L. I., Nov. 3.-Alfred Lewis, a carpenter of Mineola, while : at work upon an old building which was being torn down yesterday, fell from the second story. Following him was a large beam which had been knocked from its supports and fell across Mr. Lewis' left leg, breaking it in two places. The man was taken to his home at Mineola, and on the way declared that his only regret was that he might not be able to vote on Tuesday. Hempstead Democrats Paraded. HEMPSTEAD, L. I., Nov. 3.-A glorious rally and parade was given last night under the auspices of the Hempstead Bryan and Stevenson Campaign Club. There were about three thousand in line, clubs from Freeport, Rockville Center, Baldwins, Mineola and other villages taking part. The parade was one of the largest ever seen in the village and the highest enthusiasm prevailed. Thieves Were Looking for Money. RICHMOND HILL, L. I., Nov. 3.- Thieves entered the residence of John Hermessen of this place Wednesday night during the absence of the family and ranrascked the house from top to bottom. It is evident the thieves were looking for money, as a large quantity of silverware was left untouched, as were many valuable pieces of bric-a-brac. KILLING WAS ACCIDENTAL. Released Upon Paying Fine -Will Be A Witness in Another Case. CUMBERLAND, Md., Nov. 3.-Frank Irwin, of Pittsburg, was yesterday fined $500 and $53 costs for manslaughter, in the shooting of James Slattery, of Richmond, Va., at Pinto, this county. He paid and left with his father Richard Irwin, for Pittsburg. The shooting was more of an accident than a crime. Irwin goes to Cleveland -as a witness in the street car riot cases, in which several persons were killed. QUEENS AND NASSAU. Will Be Found in the Democratio Column on Tuesday. JAMAICA, L, I., Nov. 3.--The campaign in the Second 1 Senatorial District will practically close to-night with many meetings throughout Queens and Nassau counties, at which Democratic speakers of eminence will present the issues of the day and arouse enthusiasm for the ticket. The Democrats of both counties feel greatly encouraged by the assurances of support they have received during the last few days. A large number of Republicans have quietly appreached Democrats leaders in almost every election district and said they were going to vote for Bryan, although they would true to the local nominees. It is prove estimated that the old-time Democratic majority will be rolled up in Queens, notwithstanding reports of defections to the Republican candidates, and that the normal Republican majority of Nassau will be considerably cut down. The election of Charles Wissel, the Democratic candidate for State Senator, is predicted, his majority in the district being placed at anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500, and all two Assembly. men in the borough. Brooklynite Held for Discharging Firearms. WOODHAVEN, L. I., Nov. 3.-- William Heideser, of 25 Maujer street, Brooklyn, (From the Binghamton Leader.) "The Brooklyn Citizen" contrasts the sentiment of its city to-day, in relation to Mr. Bryan, with that of four years ago, and it finds in the contrast plenty of food for the satisfaction of the Democratic party. There is no question whatever that, in the State of New York, the feeling that Mr. Bryan now inspires is vastly warmer and more - enthusiastic than that which greeted him in 1896. He is a different man in the eyes of many people to-day, and this is evidenced not only in the accessions of gold Democrats but in the Republican voters who have, in some cases openly, and in most cases quietly to friends, declared their intention to support him at the polls next Tuesday. These voters are not marked as Democrats in the Republicanvass, and there is good reason to believe that a disagreeable surprise is in store for the managers of the G. O. P. The reason for this friendly attitude of thonsands of citizens who were against the Democratic candidate four years ago is explained by the "Citizen," which says: "That Colonel Bryan erred, as McKinley and thousands of other distinguished men did on the money question, is as dust in the balance compared with his magnificent services to the cause of equal-handed justice both at home and abroad. That the American flag shall stand for freedom, and not for oppression; that the Declaration of Independence shall lose none of its vitality; that the people and not any plutocracy shall rule this land, and that as of old we shall keep clear of all entangling foreign alliance while maintaining friendly relations with every well-disposed nation, are the things for which Colonel Bryan preeminently stands at this hour, and in behalf of which he has, as we have just said, made exertions unequaled by even the most brilliant and tireless of his supporters." Herein are found the causes of Mr. Bryan's popularity, which has increased so wonderfully that the Democratic mind is to-day fixed in reasonable contemplation of the prospect of his certain election. The idea that the principle of human liberty shall be sacrificed to commercial greed, and that the affairs of government shall be conducted according to the will of the trusts and the syndicates, is repugnant to the American sense of right, of freedom and of justice:/and it is Mr. Bryan's unalterable opposition to all forms of aggression menneing the liberties and rights of the people that makes him to-day the hope of the country; the one man- whom the friends of popular sovereignty, in all that it means, can look for protection against the allied forces of imperialism and greed, which now threaten to enslave the people and to 1111- / dermine the foundations of the republic.
