EMU Dumps Toledo Special to The News TOLEDO, Ohio - : A school, record kickoff return and Mike Strickland's yeoman running carried Eastern Michigan to a 28-12 upset victory over Toledo Saturday night as the Hurons closed the 1974 season. Clarence Chapman returned the .second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, breaking the record of 90 yards set in 1955 by Virgil Windom. Strickland gained 205 yards in 38 carries to close his career er with 3,234 yards, also a school record. S A two-yard run by Darrell Diuguid put EMU ahead, 7-0, but the Rockets came back to take the lead on a 23-yard pass from Gene Swick to Randy Whately and Larry y Macek's recovery of a blocked punt in the end zone. Toledo failed to convert after both touchdowns and fell behind, 14-12, when Strickland galloped 24 yards for a touchdown. After Chapman's electrifying run, Strickland closed the scoring; with a three-yard run. Defense was the key for the Hurons, who finished 4-6-1. Swick was the nation's total offense leader with 232 yards per game but was held to 121 • - 126 passing and minus five rushing.
