New East Side Airline Terminal Opens Dec. 1 airports will be speeded up mestic and foreign airlines Airlines Terminal Building. a square block near the Built as a cost of over $7,500,000 by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority and leased for at least the next 20 years to an operating corporation set up by 10 U. S. carriers, the massive building covers 80,000 square feet between First Ave. and Tunnel Approach St., and 37th and 38th Sts. Running time for airport coaches from the 1 new terminal to LaGuardia is about 27 minutes; to Idlewild, 35 minutes. These times are from 16 minutes to one hour less than for coaches operating from the present Airlines Building at Park Ave, and 42d St. or from 11 other terminal points scattered throughout the midtown area. Until the proposed West Side Airlines Terminal is built, buses to Newark Airport also will operate from the new East Side location. Although no airport-bound coaches will be run from Park Ave. and 42d St. or other Manhattan departure stations after Dee. 1, the airlines will maintain their present midtown ticket offices. Coaches will swing out of the new structure directly onto the tunnel approach without having to buck heavy midtown traffic. On the incoming run from LaGuardia to Idlewild, coaches will have only a short distance to traverse before entering the building. An average of 6,500 passengers are expected to use the terminal's facilities daily. Terminal Features.
