Boro programs get 1.3M boost

Boro programs get 1.3M boost More than $1.3 million was added to the city's recently approved expense budget for cultural, ethnic and social institutions and programs in Queens, Borough President Claire Shulman announced yesterday. She said the additions had been made as a result of last-minute negotiations with other elected officials. Shulman said the funds will be distributed in the following manner: $495,700 to be shared by 34 established community groups and ethnic programs boroughwide, $327,000 for groups hurt by past budget cuts, $345,000 for select Queens cultural institutions, and $147,350 for programs operating through the Queens Arts Development Fund. As a result of the funds, Shulman said, newer and less-known organizations will be able to expand their services and programs, making their groups' activities known to people outside the borough as well as residents of Queens. "The city allocations made to many of these groups help them gain additional support from foundations, the private sector, and the general public," said Shulman, who contends that such groups in Manhattan usually get the most attention and financial assistance. Individual grants range from $1,000 for the Rockaway-Five Towns Symphony to $50,000 for the Southern Queens Park Association. Large awards Large awards include: $45,000 for the Queens Council on the Arts; $28,000 for the Rufus King Mansion in Jamaica; $25,000 for the Flushing Council on the Arts; $20,000 each for the Langston Hughes Library and Cultural Center in Corona, the Queens Symphony and the Seuffert Band; $15,000 each for the Queens Heritage Corp., the Thalia Spanish Theater, the Ollantay Center for Hispanic Arts, and the Bayside Historical Society; and $10,000 each to the Black Spectrum Theater in St. Albans, the Queens Philharmonic, Woodside-onthe-Move and the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society.
