Time to bust out the tweed and flat caps — Peaky Blinders is coming back. Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in a new movie coming to Netflix, made in association with BBC Film. You can catch a glimpse of Murphy and co-star Barry Keoghan in costume in a new photo, released as the filming wraps for the upcoming movie.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy, who reunited with Knight on set, told Netflix. “It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

What is the Peaky Blinders movie about?

The film, which has now completed filming, will be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning, six-season gangster saga. Set in Birmingham between 1919 and 1934, Peaky Blinders followed the rise (and sometimes fall) of the Shelby family as they navigated a world wracked with radical social, economic, and political change.

“I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II,” Peaky Blinders creator Knight told Netflix. “The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”

Harper, who directed episodes of the show’s first season in 2013, will direct the new film from a script by Knight. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

“There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew,” Harper added. “We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”

Peaky Blinders’ impact has continued to be felt since the series took its final bow in 2022: Its meticulous approach to menswear spawned a fashion craze, and One Day’s Leo Woodall cites the show as a key inspiration. “I was watching Peaky Blinders and I put on my Peaky Blinders–style hat, did my Tommy Shelby impression, and thought, ‘I wanna be an actor,’ ” he told Netflix.

The last time we saw Tommy Shelby in the Season 6 finale, he was riding off on a white horse, intent on starting a new life. What does the new movie hold in store for him? The plot is still very much under wraps, but Knight did tease that things are about to go boom — and we expect nothing less from the Shelby clan. “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight said. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
