It was one year ago today that former model Leah Darrow implored Catholics to pray for her darling baby, Sly.

Darrow took to her Instagram account to share a crucial milestone, Sly’s sixth-month anniversary of being in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The former model and Catholic convert gave birth to Sly on May 1, 2024. Born at just 22 weeks, the tiny baby came into the world weighing just 1 pound, 2 ounces.

The baby has marked several crucial milestones, including lung development and learning the rhythm of eating and breathing since he first began with a feeding tube, and he has had several surgeries.

But the biggest news yet came this month, when Baby Sly arrived at the hospital for another surgery, this time to close a patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA. It serves as a temporary blood vessel that connects the aorta to the pulmonary artery in the womb. It usually closes on its own, but requires surgery if it doesn’t.

On Oct. 9, Darrow shared an adorable photo of Sly back at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital ahead of the planned heart surgery.

“As far as heart surgeries go, this is considered the easiest one — to close his PDA,” Darrow wrote.

And then she shared what she called a “miracle update”: Tests showed that the surgery was not needed after all.

“I guess God has canceled Sly’s heart surgery. I’m not sure why I’m surprised,” she added, as “it seems that God continues to surprise us with every step in my son’s life.”

“All Glory to God,” the ecstatic mother wrote, before ending with: “Now … a nap!”

It's been a very long road since last May, when the tiny baby made his appearance in the world, and many in the medical community predicted his chances for survival were extremely low.

But small Sly, who is no longer teeny, proves that babies can survive at this age outside of their mother’s womb with proper medical care and lots of prayers.

On the feast of St. Jude, this happy news reminds us all that, with God, nothing is a lost cause.

Please join us in keeping baby Sly and his family in your prayers!

St. Jude, pray for us!
