Liam Hemsworth’s life from turbulent romance with famous ex to family health scare

Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is taking over from Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, but what do we know about The Witcher star away from the cameras?

The Witcher season four will feature a brand new Geralt of Rivia as Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth steps into the role of the iconic monster hunter.

Created by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, his bestselling series has already formed the basis of a trilogy of video games and three seasons on Netflix.

However, after three rounds as Geralt, series lead Henry Cavill decided to bow out from the series, leaving Hemsworth to take up the mantle.

Fans are gearing up for more epic battles on the Continent as Geralt, along with Yennefer of Vengerberg (played by Anya Chalotra) and Princess Ciri (Freya Allan), returns to screens this Thursday (30th October).

In the meantime, let’s take a look at everything we know about Hemsworth’s life away from screens.

Famous family

Liam Hemsworth is Australian and was born and raised in Melbourne to author Leonie van Os and a social-services counsellor Craig Thompson. When he was in high school, the family relocated to Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne.

He is famously the younger brother of two fellow actors: Marvel’s Thor star Chris Hemsworth and Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth.

The trio share a close bond, despite some sibling rivalry, and Liam has referred to his brother Chris as his “hero” during an interview with GQ.

“He's honestly my last call,” he shared in the 2019 chat. “When I find myself in a position where I'm 50-50 about a script, then I call Chris.

“And his opinion I trust more than anyone in my team.”

Health scare

The Hemsworth brothers have recently been hit by devastating news after their father Craig was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

This also means that Liam and his brothers are at a much higher risk of developing the condition themselves.

While The Witcher star has remained private about his family’s health battle, Chris has met the challenge head-on with a new documentary, Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, in which the father-son pair travel across Australia’s Northern Territory to revisit their favourite memories.

“The result was a more profound, more moving, and more surprising journey than I ever anticipated,” Chris said in a statement.

A-list ex

Liam’s most high-profile relationship to date was his on-again, off-again relationship with pop star Miley Cyrus after they starred together in the film The Last Song.

They first began dating in 2009, reportedly splitting up and getting back together a number of times before announcing their engagement in 2012.

After living together for some time in Los Angeles, they confirmed their split in September 2013. However, three years later rumours began to swirl that they had rekindled their relationship after they were spotted together at Liam’s home in Malibu.

Miley was also seen sporting her engagement ring and, in an October 2016 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, confirmed the engagement was back on.

They eventually tied the knot on 23rd December 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee but only remained married for seven months.

Liam filed for divorce in August 2019 and their split was finalised on 28th January 2020.

Current relationship

Liam is currently with Australian model Gabriella Brooks, having reportedly begun dating back in 2019.

Their relationship was made official with an Instagram post in 2020 after quarantining together during the Covid-19 pandemic.
