Where was Wayward filmed? Inside filming locations for Netflix’s gripping new thriller

Let’s take a look at some of the filming locations you’re about to see in Netflix’s newest thriller sensation, Wayward

Netflix thriller Wayward is shaping up to be one of the streamer’s biggest hits this autumn as it delves into a sinister small-town mystery.

Created by Mae Martin, the Canadian writer and comedian takes on a very different role as a police officer investigating a seemingly perfect town that’s hiding a dark secret.

After moving to Tall Pines with his wife Laura (played by Sarah Gadon), he soon starts to suspect that the enigmatic leader of the local school for troubled youth, Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette), isn’t all she seems.

Meanwhile, two rebellious teens, Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and Abbie (Sydney Topliffe), could be the key to unrooting the town’s mysterious history.

With the eight-part series about to cause a stir on Netflix when it drops tomorrow (Thursday, 25th September), let’s take a look at some key locations where Wayward was filmed.

Where was Wayward filmed?

Wayward was primarily filmed around various locations in Canada, the series being a co-production from Canadian studio Sphere Media.

Much of the series was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, using a combination of rural, urban and suburban backdrops to create the fictional town of Tall Pines.

This included the small town of Millbrook which is located just an hour outside of Toronto and was one of the settings most frequently used to create the small town.

Ontario news outlet kawarthaNOW reported in early July 2024 that King Street East, between Union Street and Tupper Street, had been closed for filming.

The roads were reportedly transformed with new storefronts and signage to create the atmosphere of Tall Pines’ town centre.

One of the town’s top reviews on TripAdvisor sums up Millbrook’s charm, writing: “Amazing trails leading to gorgeous views, ponds and forested areas.

“Easy walking paths and great for everyone. Pleasant old town charm in century village of Millbrook.”

Despite being set in a remote small town, Wayward may not be the first time you’ve seen the real village of Millbrook on screen.

It has also been used as a backdrop for episodes of Reacher, the popular Prime Video action thriller starring Alan Ritchson as Lee Child’s iconic wandering hero.

You may have also witnessed the town in the films A History of Violence and Let It Snow, as well as Netflix productions Jupiter’s Legacy and Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

It’s also a popular spot for Canadian productions, having been used in the TV shows Murdoch Mysteries and Anne with an E.

More specific locations for Wayward have not been disclosed, though it’s believed a variety of residential streets and school and college campuses around Toronto were used to bring both the town and its reform school to life.
