Inside Rebecca Ferguson’s life from rarely-seen husband to feud with Hollywood co-star

Rebecca Ferguson has become one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars and is leading Netflix’s latest must-watch thriller

Rebecca Ferguson’s latest film A House of Dynamite is a must-watch thriller for Netflix subscribers and it’s now streaming from today (Friday, 24th October).

Featuring an all-star cast including Idris Elba, Jason Clarke and Anthony Ramos, Ferguson takes command in key scenes as Captain Olivia Walker in the White House Situation Room.

When the US becomes under threat from an impending nuclear attack, Captain Walker and other defence officials desperately scramble to try and keep their country safe.

Known for roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as the Dune and Mission: Impossible franchises, Ferguson’s career has exploded in recent years before landing her latest role in the acclaimed Kathryn Bigelow film.

But what’s been confirmed about her personal life, including her upbringing and romantic history? Let’s take a look.

Early life

Rebecca Ferguson is Swedish and was born and raised in Stockholm, growing up in the central Vasastan district.

However, she also has British roots as her mother Rosemary Ferguson moved to Sweden from the UK when she was 25.

Ferguson’s father is Swedish businessman Olov Sundström while her mother Rosemary helped the iconic band ABBA translate their songs into English for their second studio album, Waterloo. She even appears with the band on the cover of their third album.

The actress has been hard at work since she was 13, appearing as a model for several TV adverts for cosmetics and jewellery. She is also a skilled dancer, having taught Argentine tango for several years in Lund.

Before becoming an actress, she worked various jobs including at a daycare centre, as a nanny, at a jewellery shop, at a shoe shop and at a Korean restaurant.

Family and relationships

Ferguson was originally in a long-term relationship with Ludwig Hallberg, a psychosynthesis therapist. They share a son together, who was born in 2007, though the couple separated in April 2015.

The following year she was confirmed to be in a relationship with businessman Rory St. Clair Gainer. They tied the knot in December 2018, enjoying a private and intimate wedding, and Gainer largely stays out of the spotlight.

While they have been seen together out and about in London, where they have a house in Richmond, and at various events including Formula One British Grand Prix in July this year, they rarely step out on the red carpet together.

However, Gainer and Ferguson did both attend the red carpet premiere for A House of Dynamite at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, suggesting the couple could start making more public appearances in future.

Ferguson and Gainer shared a daughter who was born in May 2018.

Hollywood feud

During a 2024 appearance on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast, Ferguson revealed an “idiot” co-star made her cry on set after a heated row.

“This human being was being so insecure and angry because this person couldn’t get the scenes out,” she said. “And I think I was so vulnerable and uncomfortable that I got screamed at and I would cry walking off set.

“This person would literally look at me in front of the whole crew and say, ‘You call yourself an actor? This is what I have to work with?’ I stood there just breaking,” Ferguson recalled.

“Because this person was number one on the call sheet, there was no safety net for me. No one had my back.”

The star did not confirm the name of the actor, but has confirmed she wasn’t talking about Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman or Ryan Reynolds.
