Coronation Street's Pauline McLynn warns 'expect bad behaviour' after Rovers twist

Coronation Street newcomer Pauline McLynn made quite the entrance on the ITV soap as Maggie Driscoll on Monday night, and there's some 'bad behaviour' ahead she's teased

One Coronation Street newcomer has warned fans to expect "bad behaviour" in upcoming scenes, with big twists on the way.

Pauline McLynn made a dramatic debut on Monday night as Eva Price's "mother-in-law from hell" Maggie Driscoll. With her entrance came the jaw-dropping news that she'd given her son Ben, Eva's husband, the money to buy the Rovers Return.

As it dawned on new landlady Eva that her beloved pub was now in fact owned by Maggie, she was horrified. Now, actress Pauline has discussed what else is on the cards.

Speaking to The Mirror, she teased a new storyline as well as a dramatic Christmas, hinting her character would spark uproar with some of her "bad behaviour". She shared: "She’s fiercely loyal and protective of her family.

"There’ll be things happening over Christmas where you think, ‘Oh come on, that’s very bad behaviour at the very least!’ My family will probably say, ‘Is that your mother Sheila you’re playing there?’ The older she got, the more she’d push boundaries – and I’ve got a bit of that in me too.

"Maggie likes to throw in the most outrageous things just to see how far she can go. But often that line has been long passed! And she’ll say, ‘What’s the fuss about? You’re a bit touchy, aren’t you?’ If you’re a certain age you might feel you have a certain licence to act badly, you know? Because you’re the Mammy.

"And, of course, she has that thing she can hold over all the family, and she uses that like a blunt instrument: ‘You’re only here because of my money. I own the place – you just work in it.’ Which is a hard one for anyone to get over."

On what's ahead, she added: "It’s great to be the bearer of such good news – something great coming down the line in a great series. It’s a very happy time."

Pauline wasn't told much about her character at the beginning, but she's since learned plenty. She shared: "I was told she’s larger than life and gets on with everyone… Obviously, there are family dynamics – in every family there are.

"And maybe at some stage the carpet will be pulled from under everyone’s feet and they’ll go ‘Oh! Oh really?’ That’s literally all I was told. As the scripts came in, I thought, ‘Oh, I see!’ But of course I’ve learned a whole lot more about her since then.

"You make decisions quickly here – it’s bewilderingly fast-paced. You trust the writers and directors, and everyone’s so generous that you know nobody will let you mess up. They’ve got your back. So… in Corrie we trust – and on we go!"
