'Charlotte Church was so excited when I proposed to her but six weeks later we broke up'

Charlotte Church became the latest victim on Celebrity Traitors, with the singer often commanding media attention for her personal life

Charlotte Church broke off her relationship with former rugby star Gavin Henson just six weeks after getting engaged. Church has been back in the headlines after she was axed from Celebrity Traitors this week.

The former singer and actress, 39, paid the price for being too inquisitive and was 'murdered' by Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr and Cat Burns in the latest episode of the BBC show.

The former Opera star has been a household name since the age of 11 after wowing fans with her stunning voice. She later ventured into acting and other musical-based projects, but it was her relationship with the ex-rugby player that kept generating column inches.

The pair struck up a romance in 2005 and went on to have two children together, Ruby and Dexter. They announced their engagement in 2010.

However, just six weeks on, the pair shockingly confirmed their separation. Church had once told how Henson had bought a two-carat heart-shaped diamond engagement ring while holidaying in Dubai together.

In an interview with OK! magazine, Church claimed she was "absolutely joyous" at the proposal and cited it as an "emotional" moment. However, Henson has since admitted that he and Church decided to split for the good of their children.

"It’s no secret that we weren’t getting on," he previously said. "We didn’t want to drag it out for another couple of years. I couldn’t have the children being five or six years old, and crying because we were arguing.

"I wouldn’t want to tear the family apart then, that would be horrible. I thought we were going to be together forever," he continued. "We loved each other, but we weren’t good for each other."

A statement issued on behalf of the couple said: "Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson have confirmed reports of their separation and would like to stress that no third party was involved.

"They are trying their hardest to deal with this difficult time for both of them in a way which will minimise the impact on their two young children. They fully intend to work together and cooperate in ensuring there is as little disruption as possible to the children's lives."

Church went on to marry Jonathan Powell, a musician, in 2017. Speaking of her relationship to Powell, Church cleared up the timeline and insisted the romance occurred after she and Henson parted ways.

"I'd been writing with Johnny for a while, but it was a good couple of months after me and Gav split," she told the BBC in 2010. "I kind of asked Gav's permission in a way. I said to him, 'I really want you to know that nothing ever went on between me and Johnny while we were still together.'"

Henson married his long-term partner Katie Wilson in 2019. Speaking after her celebrated stint on the Celebrity edition of The Traitors, Church said: “It was way more intense than I expected.

"It has restored my faith in celebrities a little because, generally, I just really keep out of that whole celebrity scene, and I have perhaps been a little bit too harsh in my judgement of celebrities."
