Liverpool handed Marc Guehi transfer update as fresh exit pathway emerges after deal collapse
Marc Guehi was on the verge of a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window before the transfer fell apart at the last minute, but the England international could yet be on the move in January
Manchester United have been urged to consider signing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi and beat Liverpool to the defender's signature. The future of Guehi was a hot topic during the summer transfer window, with a £35million switch to Anfield nearly over the line before it fell through at the eleventh hour.
The England international ended up staying put at Selhurst Park, but with his contract set to run out at the end of the season and a new deal looking unlikely, Guehi's departure from Palace seems inevitable.
This has sparked interest from a number of clubs who are reportedly keen to secure his services either on a free transfer next summer or in a bargain deal come January.
Despite making four new additions this summer, United didn't bolster their central defence. Now, former Red Devils star Louis Saha has outlined why he believes Ruben Amorim's squad should make a move for Guehi in the upcoming transfer window, ahead of their fierce rivals.
"Marc Guehi is definitely a top player and a leader. I love him as a player," Saha told BetVictor. "It's simple: if Man Utd can hijack the deal to Liverpool, even by paying £20million more than his market price, do it.
"I think he's a terrific player. I really like his consistency and the security he provides.
"I also appreciate his communication, he's a very reliable player. He will undoubtedly be part of a huge team and play for significant stakes in the future."
In the summer of 2024, United made the decision to bring on board both Leny Yoro and Matthijs De Ligt to bolster their centre-back options, while Ayden Heaven was also snapped up from Arsenal.
Harry Maguire's contract is due to run out at the end of the season, whilst Lisandro Martinez is still on the mend from a long-term knee injury.
For Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions are reeling from four consecutive defeats in the Premier League and have already been handed several injury concerns in defence.
Giovanni Leoni is expected to be sidelined for the majority of the season with a knee injury, leaving Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez as the only senior centre-backs in their squad.
