What international media are saying about Mason Greenwood after ex-Man Utd man's four-goal haul
Mason Greenwood scored four goals for Marseille in their 6-2 win over Le Havre, and the international media were quick to heap praise on the former Manchester United forward
Mason Greenwood earned rave reviews from media across Europe after his stunning four-goal haul fired Marseille to the summit of Ligue 1 with a thrilling 6-2 victory over Le Havre. The former Manchester United forward made history for the French giants as he netted four in Saturday's dramatic encounter at the Stade Velodrome.
Former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has previously endured some struggles getting the most out of Greenwood, watched his side fall behind to the visitors before the ex-England international levelled from the penalty spot. But the real fireworks were reserved for the closing stages as spectators were treated to five goals in a breathtaking final 25 minutes.
Marseille capitalised on their numerical advantage after Gautier Lloris received his marching orders in the 34th minute. Greenwood, who was reportedly interested in a Premier League comeback in the summer, was the chief beneficiary as European outlets heaped praise on his remarkable display.
Spanish newspaper AS described him as "A Greenwood from another planet" in their match coverage. Having found the net 21 times in France's top flight last campaign, the 24-year-old has already got six goals in just eight league appearances this term.
French sports daily L'Equipe described Greenwood's showing as "a near-perfect performance" as Marseille climbed to the top of the table. This came despite De Zerbi acknowledging his team's display was far from polished for significant periods of the match.
Le Monde also spotlighted the standing ovation that welcomed Greenwood as he left the pitch in the 79th minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was also slammed for squandering what ought to have been a certain goal after a "golden pass" from his English team-mate.
Marseille made the most of their opponents' shortcomings earlier this weekend. Champions Paris Saint-Germain dropped points after a 3-3 stalemate at home to Strasbourg on Friday, while Lyon also stumbled following a 3-2 loss at Nice on Saturday.
By contrast, Marseille has now secured five Ligue 1 victories on the bounce and leads PSG by a single point for now. L'Equipe also emphasised the importance of his four-goal haul at the Stade Velodrome.
The last Marseille player to net four in a Ligue 1 match was French icon Jean-Pierre Papin, who managed that same sun in a 7-0 demolition of Lyon back in 1991. He also enters distinguished territory after taking his Ligue 1 total to 27 goals in a little more than one campaign.
The last English footballer to reach that mark in France was Glenn Hoddle, who enjoyed four years at Monaco between 1987 and 1991. Marseille will face a much tougher challenge when they visit Lens next weekend.
Nevertheless, it's clearer than ever Greenwood, who joined Marseille from Getafe in a £26.5million move last year, will play a crucial part if Les Olympiens are to claim their first league crown since 2010.
