Mason Greenwood's team-mate, 21, collapses on pitch as Marseille release update

Marseille's Ligue 1 match against Angers was overshadowed by 21-year-old midfielder Bilal Nadir collapsing barely ten minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

21-year-old Marseille star Bilal Nadir collapsed during their Ligue 1 match against Angers in frightening scenes on Wednesday night. Medics rushed to help the young midfielder, who had to be stretchered off and taken to the hospital after appearing to lose consciousness.

However, the French club have now released a reassuring medical statement, confirming that Nadir "did not lose consciousness at the time of the incident" and remains under observation in hospital.

They add that "all of his vital signs were found to be normal," following attention by medical staff and emergency services. Nadir was rushed off to hospital for a "full medical check-up". The club confirmed that his condition is now 'good' though assessments are ongoing.

The full medical statement that Marseille released on Thursday, translated from French into English, reads: "Olympique de Marseille wishes to give reassuring news regarding Bilal Nadir, who suffered a health scare yesterday during the match against SCO Angers. The player did not lose consciousness during the incident.

"Upon being attended to by the club's medical staff, and the emergency services present at the scene, all of his vital signs were found to be normal. As a precaution, Bilal Nadir was transferred to the hospital for a full medical check-up. His condition is good, and he remains under observation while this assessment continues.

"The club thanks the medical teams for their responsiveness, as well as the many fans for their messages of support. Further information will be provided as the situation develops."

Marseille's statement came after Roberto De Zerbi said he had lost consciousness in his post-match press conference.

“He lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital for tests and checks. We are all worried and hope it’s nothing serious,” the Marseille boss said on Wednesday night before the club clarified the player's condition.

Nadir, a team-mate of Mason Greenwood's at Marseille, has been a key figure in the first team, having broken through over recent seasons since signing from Nice in 2021.

He spent two seasons playing for their B team in the fourth tier before making his senior debut in September 2023.

The midfielder made nine appearances during that breakthrough season and played 16 times last term. This season, he has featured, primarily as a substitute, in all but one of their league matches - as well as making his debut in the Champions League.

Morocco also called up Nadir in March for two World Cup qualifiers. However, he did not feature in either match.

Nadir has represented both France, where he was born, and Morocco, where his parents hail from, at youth level internationally. The midfielder most recently made two appearances for the latter's Under-23s in November 2023, albeit they were only in friendlies.
