Senne Lammens responds to Peter Schmeichel's brutal 'wrong keeper' comments

Senne Lammens was signed in a £18m deal from Royal Antwerp in the summer but it appears that Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel was not totally convinced early on

Manchester United star Senne Lammens claims Peter Schmeichel’s suggestion that they should NOT have signed him ‘makes sense’. The Belgian goalkeeper was signed in a £18m deal with Royal Antwerp in the summer as the Red Devils attempted to fix their problem position.

Lammens has since firmly established himself as Ruben Amorim’s number one following a series of standout performances at Old Trafford. Despite that, United icon Schmeichel had some reservations and suggested that the club should have looked at more experienced options.

Speaking this summer, he said: “As for Lammens, I’ll be honest, I’d never heard of him until the link came up. I know his stats are excellent across the top 10 European leagues. But that was with Antwerp in Belgium, in a team that finished fifth.

Schmeichel added: “Lammens could turn out to be the best signing ever – but right now, it feels like a hopeful one, and that’s not what United need at this moment in time.

“If we’d signed him alongside Martinez, that would have made perfect sense: a proven World Cup winner as number one, with a talented young keeper developing behind him. But instead, we’re left asking who’s going to be number one.”

And Lammens has now responded by joking about Schmeichel’s comments, while he also claimed he might have had a point. On their meeting, he said to Belgian outlet HLN : “Weren’t you the one who said they should have bought Donnarumma or Martinez?

“No, not really. It makes sense that he also had reservations. When I signed, he simply didn’t know me yet. I don’t think he had watched many Antwerp matches.

“During one of the first matches he came to the sidelines for a little chat. He was very friendly. He tried to make me feel at ease, said I just had to do my thing and give confidence to my defence.”

Lammens has made three appearances for the Red Devils so far, keeping one clean sheet. United fans have hailed him by chanting ‘are you Schmeichel in disguise’. While Lammens is happy with the praise, he is not getting too far ahead of himself.

He added: “That’s England for you. If things go badly, they can bury you deep, but if things go well, they praise you to the skies.

“I take that with a grain of salt, because to be mentioned in the same sentence as Schmeichel, I’m going to have to prove myself many more times. But I did find it a very nice compliment.

“I hope to play here for 10 years and be important, so that, like Schmeichel and Van der Sar, I can leave a legacy.”
