Liverpool women star rushed to hospital as match halted due to horror injury

Liverpool women's player Mia Enderby had to be stretchered off and rushed to hospital after a neck injury as a mammoth 22 minutes was added on for the match against Tottenham following the lengthy stoppage

Liverpool women's star Mia Enderby had to be taken to hospital with a suspected neck injury after an incident during the loss at Tottenham with the game having to be stopped for more than ten minutes.

Enderby appeared to land on her neck after jumping for a ball in the air and, after some notable treatment, had to be taken from the pitch on a stretcher. The lengthy pause resulted in 22 minutes of stoppage time being added on at the end of the match.

The 20-year-old had been an ever-present in all six of Liverpool's Women's Super League games this season and started against Spurs. Speaking after the match manager Gareth Taylor said he was yet to speak with the club's medical department, but the injury was "not nice to see".

He also added: "Hopefully she is OK. At one point I thought she was going to re-enter in terms of getting back up and start to play again but with those types of injuries it's really crucial we take care of them."

Tottenham were able to come from behind to claim all three points thanks to goals from Toko Koga and Bethany England. Liverpool had taken the lead in the match courtesy of Beata Olsson's opener.

Enderby signed a new two-year deal in the summer, having made 42 appearances and scoring six goals in her first two seasons with the club. It adds to Liverpool's injury woes as they are already without Marie Hobinger and Sophie Roman Haug, who suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries before the international break.

Taylor bemoaned the situation facing the team as he said: "We didn't have anything from the sidelines today unfortunately. It's not ideal when you have to play a 21-year-old Hannah Silcock up on the right side. We just have to battle through it.

"The message is clear. We're working so hard as staff, players and everyone at the club to turn this into a better situation. But it takes a bit of time and a bit of support. Unfortunately, as we've seen at the moment, we're getting knocked a bit - but we'll keep fighting."

The Reds boss admits he's not expecting to be leading the WSL, but wants to see more and for longer. He added: "We don't expect to be top of the league, we're realistic and we know we're at the start of a really, really long project. But, of course, you want to see some positive moments and I think we've seen glimpses. It's just we're not able to sustain it for long enough in a game of 90 minutes."
