Why Kieran McKenna should think long and hard about swapping Ipswich Town for Celtic
Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is in the conversation to replace Brendan Rodgers as Celtic manager- but if he's offered the job, he should think twice, because it might not be quite what it seems
Kieran McKenna might feel flattered to be linked with the Celtic manager's job. That's an understandable mistake to make for managers like him.
Because the Scottish giants have a rich and proud pedigree of success, huge following around the world and one of the most passionate set of supporters in football. Celtic Park is something to behold when an Old Firm game is taking place. Trust me, I've been there.
But McKenna should think long and hard about making a move north of the border, should Celtic decide to offer him the chance to replace Brendan Rodgers. Because McKenna has built an impressive reputation in English football, having led Ipswich Town to promotion from League One to the top flight.
He had the courage to leave his coaching role at Manchester United, to seek a brave challenge elsewhere. And he made such an impression as Ipswich manager, some senior figures at United even discussed the possibility of recalling McKenna as manager, when Erik ten Hag was struggling to survive.
While during his time at United, a certain Jose Mourinho demanded McKenna took his training sessions. But Portman Road is a different world to Celtic Park, and the footballing hotbed that is Glasgow. Winning is taken for granted. Failure is not an option.
And it is clear right now, as Rodgers pointed out to his ultimate cost, that Celtic have an inferior squad to ones of the past.
Celtic have opted for some welcome nostalgia, having appointed former boss Martin O'Neill on a caretaker basis. But it's positive results Celtic need, not a trip down memory lane. Storm clouds have hung over Celtic for a while, leading to a somewhat toxic atmosphere.
The team has lost three of its last five games. Celtic might be second in the Scottish Premiership, but they still trail leaders Hearts by eight points.
McKenna would be expected to overhaul Hearts. He would be expected to succeed in the Champions League next season. But what funds would he be given to strengthen his squad between now and the start of next season?
It's a big call. Because it takes a brave manager to leave his comfort zone, for a job capable of making or breaking you.
