Tyson Fury's dad has very different take on Fabio Wardley fight

Wardley scored a monumental upset over Joseph Parker on Saturday, but many have since slammed Howard Foster's decision to step in and stop the contest

Boxing fans questioned Fabio Wardley's stoppage of Joseph Parker on Saturday night, but Tyson Fury's dad John insists the fight should have been stopped EARLIER.

In a mouthwatering contest in London, Wardley absorbed several hard shots before eventually forcing referee Howard Foster to stop the heavyweight dust-up in the 11th round. Parker was in control of large chunks of the bout, but his British rival kept finding a way to stay in the fight.

Parker was in full control of proceedings in the 10th, but Wardley turned the tide and got his foe backed against the ropes and nearly shut Parker's lights out. A huge right in the 11th wobbled Parker before Wardley eventually got the stoppage as referee Foster stepped in and waved off the bout.

Many believe the fight was stopped far too early and fans have since slammed Foster's decision to step in when he did, but John Fury admits the dust-up should have been stopped earlier.

“Whoever said that stoppage was a little bit early wants locking up and licenses taken off of them,” Fury Sr said to iFL TV, reacting to Foster stopping the contest in the 11th round after Wardley had hurt his foe. “For my money, it was 10 seconds too late because Joe was taking unnecessary punches off a man that can knock a wall down with either hand in Fabio Wardley,” he continued.

Parker was up on two of the three judges' scorecards when his fight with Wardley was stopped. That said, the Kiwi heavyweight refused to complain about the stoppage, saying: “At the end of the fight, I thought I was fine. but I’m not the one reffing the fight. I thought I was doing well in the fight, but I got caught, and that’s boxing. I wanted to carry on, of course. I’m good. Congratulations to Fabio Wardley. He’s a warrior, he’s a tough man. Hopefully we can have a rematch.”

Having won Parker's WBO Interim title, Wardley is the next mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk - with the pair backed to go head-to-head next year. Speaking of a potential showdown, the Ipswich heavyweight told Sky Sports: "It's very simple. I hope he's a man of his word and it comes off and we get the fight. I know it was mandated by the WBO and I know him, or his team at least, came out not too long ago to say, look, they were keeping an eye on the fight and they were happy to take on the winner."

He added: "I believe him to be a man of his word as well. So, 2026, hopefully we'll see Usyk. That would be huge." Promoter Frank Warren is already eyeing looking at March as a potential date for the clash. "I think it will be some time in March. I would love it to be in the UK and there are only two places for it and where it can happen. That will be in Riyadh or here," he said.

"That will sell out Wembley. You know what you are getting with Usyk and you know what you are getting with Fabio. It is going to be exciting. This fella has got to be one of the most exciting fighters in the world."
