Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao rematch verdict – 'Thousands of medical issues'
Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao in 2015 to preserve his unbeaten record, and reports have emerged over a possible rematch between the two legendary fighters
The President of the World Boxing Council has shared his view on a potential blockbuster rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Netflix is reportedly at the forefront of negotiations involving two of the biggest names in modern boxing.
The duo faced off over a decade ago in a fight that generated more than £500million from US pay-per-view sales, marking it one of the most anticipated bouts of its time. Mayweather emerged victorious in a fight that failed to live up to its hype, with Pacquiao attributing his lacklustre performance to a shoulder injury.
Pacquiao, the former eight-weight world champion, previously stunned the boxing community by announcing plans for a rematch against Mayweather more than a year ago. In response, Mayweather stated that his rival owed him a hefty $4million (£3m) for publicising the talks at that time.
Pacquiao is set to make his second comeback since initially hanging up his gloves in 2021, revealing that he will step back into the ring on January 24 in Las Vegas.
The 46-year-old is expected to face off against Rolando Romero, though there could be a few bumps in the road as the WBA welterweight champion is expected to defend his title elsewhere.
And WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has had his say on a potential colossal rematch between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao - sharing his belief that organisers would have to look into any possible 'medical issues' before a fight goes ahead.
"Well, Mayweather–Pacquiao was the greatest fight as a business in the history of the sport," he said, via Hard Rock Bet.
"They are two icons, two legends of boxing, two Hall of Famers. So, if they decide to do another fight, I think of course it is good for the sport.
"They are on the same level in terms of age and ability. Manny Pacquiao just fought for the WBC title, so he was very clear and capable.
"I’m sure they would look at thousands of medical issues to ensure there would be no obstacles for them to get into the ring. If they decide to do it, I do believe it’s good for the sport."
Meanwhile, former world champion boxer Amir Khan has offered his view on who Pacquiao should be fighting next.
"I think a fight with Conor Benn would be interesting. If Conor goes into the rematch against Chris Eubank Jr and wins or loses, the fight would be a fantastic fight for him against Manny Pacquiao," he said via Betway.
"That’d be huge in the UK - people would be buzzing to see Pacquiao vs Benn. A lot of people in the UK want to see Manny fight there. He’s such a big name around the world, so we would love to see him fight here.
"Conor Benn is building right now to become the next big thing in boxing, and hopefully he wins the fight against Eubank Jr in the rematch, and then it has to happen with Manny Pacquiao. If he doesn't win, I still think it is a good fight for him to do. That fight could bring massive attention.
"They are both powerful, strong, and I want to see it. Manny is older now, and he is not like his old self and won't be as sharp or as hard as he once was. These young up-and-coming fighters should up their game a little bit more and take the risk, take the big names and try to win against the biggest names out there."
