"A mother and baby were trapped under the rubble. They got out uninjured. Apparently five more remain trapped.

"Hats off to the first responders. They arrived maybe a minute and a half after the collapse.

"The scaffolding formed a "bubble" under the building rubble. Probably prevented greater injuries or death."

Toronto Police said three people trapped inside the building were released and taken to hospital.

Constable Jenifferjit Sidhu said police got a call shortly before 2 p.m. about the “hazard”.

She added: “A part of the building has collapsed along with the scaffolding. It’s a two-storey building.

"The debris has fallen on multiple people.”

Toronto paramedics spokeswoman Sandra Mcleod said two females and another patient have been rushed to hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

She said several others are being treated at the scene for minor injuries, Global News reported.
