UK snow forecast as several areas face '10cm per hour' and maps turn purple
Advanced weather modelling maps show snow could fall in some parts of the UK today, with the data suggesting the white stuff could come down at a rate of around 10cm per hour where flurries are most intense
With the weather turning colder and nights getting dark earlier, it's definitely starting to feel like winter is around the corner - and for some areas, that could include snow today.
The GFS weather model maps show areas across Scotland could be impacted by snow throughout the day. The affected areas include the Highlands and surrounding locations, particularly around Inverness and parts of the Cairngorms.
The heaviest snow is predicted to hit from around 6pm, with purple spots on the weather maps showing where snow will settle. Although the data suggests snow could fall at a rate of 10cm per hour in some areas, the maps show only around 1cm will actually settle on the ground.
BBC Weather's forecast states: "This afternoon, variable cloud with scattered showers in the north, but cloudy and wetter in northern Scotland. Mostly dry with sunny spells, areas of cloud and the odd shower elsewhere. Breezy.
"Tonight, mostly cloudy with patchy rain and showers moving east across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Elsewhere, turning cloudier, with rain reaching parts of southern England and Wales.
"Tomorrow will be breezy with cloud and lingering rain for some in southern England. Elsewhere, a mix of sunny spells, patchy cloud and scattered showers, these heavy at times in Scotland."
The outlook for Thursday to Saturday adds: "A chilly but bright start on Thursday. It will turn cloudy with strengthening winds and blustery rain from the south and west. Heavy rain will spread north-east overnight.
"Friday will see the rain clear to the north-east, giving some brief brightness. Further rain and strong winds will then move in from the south-west later on. Rain clearing to sunshine and showers on Saturday."
A Met Office forecast for late November states: "Unsettled conditions will probably be dominant across the UK at first, with showers or longer spells of rain for many areas and a risk of strong winds.
"Temperatures are expected to be around normal. During the second half of November, the most probable outcome is for increasing amounts of dry and fine weather, although with some overnight fog and frost. Any wetter spells are most likely to affect the north of the UK."
