Four major free UK email addresses being 'closed down' with 'days to act'

Talktalk say the addresses will no longer be free, with people having to pay a fee - or be cut off entirely

People with four kinds of emails will be cut off ‘within days’ if they don’t sign up to a new paid for service, they have been told. The impact is for people who have free Talktalk email addresses from when they signed up to the broadband provider - which they have been allowed to keep even thought hey moved on to another provider.

However Talktalk has now decided it won’t provide the service any more and has told former customers they have to sign up to a £5 a month Everymail service. The change impacts anyone with @talktalk.net, @lineone.net, @tiscali.co.uk, @tinyworld.co.uk email addresses - and if they don;t sign up by Monday July 28 they won’t be able to send messages.

Talktalk said to customers: “To continue delivering the best email service possible, we’ll soon be moving your TalkTalk email to a new home, Everymail, a trusted service from Open-Xchange, the world’s largest independent email provider. They’ve already been working behind the scenes to help keep your email running smoothly, and now they’ll be taking care of it directly.

“We’ve continued to provide your TalkTalk email service free of charge for some time. However, as you’re no longer a TalkTalk broadband customer, we’re unfortunately unable to continue offering it at no cost. Providing a high-quality email service requires ongoing investments in infrastructure, security, and innovation.

“The subscription fee enables Everymail to offer advanced features and continuous development to meet your needs, to continue delivering a secure and reliable experience.”

For those who sign up they will be able to keep their former talktalk email address and they also won’t need to migrate the data and old emails. The first key date is July 28. Talktalk said: “If you haven’t subscribed by 28th July, 2025, you will still be able to access your email, but you won’t be able to send any emails. Be sure to subscribe early to avoid service interruptions.”

Then by September 8 if a person hasn’t subcribed Talktalk say:

  • You will no longer be able to log in to your email.
  • You will be redirected to the subscription page.
  • To transfer to another provider, you must download all your data before this date.

If people have still not subscribed by October 31 the email account will be permanently closed, and all associated data will be deleted. Talktalk said: “This action is irreversible, so it’s important to act before this deadline.”
