'I'm a former hotel room cleaner and there are 3 things I'll never look at the same way'
A former hotel room cleaner has shared three things she has learned from her time working at three different hotels which have completely changed the experience for her when she's travelling
During your career, there's no doubt some things, some 'insider secrets', you learn that you had no idea about. And it might even change the way you see things. This is the case for a former hotel room cleaner, who now can't stay in a hotel room without thinking about certain "disgusting" things she learned from her time as a housekeeper.
Danna Murillo, a 23-year-old Costa Rican woman, has worked at three different hotels - from large international chains to local establishments. She has now confessed the experience has completely changed the way she sees hotel rooms, after seeing how they are cleaned.
In a video shared on TikTok, Danna reassured people that it's "not like this everywhere", but it has been her experience. First, she explained how they cleaned the glasses that are typically placed in the bathrooms. According to Danna, they are cleaned with the same cloth as the rest of the bathroom.
She claimed: "The same cloth used to clean the pipes or the toilet, that's the one they gave us to clean the glasses with." According to her, due to lack of time, they are often not even washed with water, but mirror cleaner spray and a cloth. She pointed out: "It was the rule, not my decision."
Another thing Danna would stay away from as a guest are the decorative pillows and runners, which now "disgust" her. The white sheets and pillowcases are changed after every guest, but according to the former hotel worker, these decorative furnishings can go months without being washed. She said: "White pillows are washed, but decorative ones are not. They are washed about once a year or only if they look dirty."
Danna will now never walk barefoot in carpeted hotel rooms. Although they might appear clean, she says they are rarely thoroughly cleaned. She added: "If there were stains, they would simply tell us to wipe them with a damp cloth and that was it."
The former hotel worker's claims divided opinions in the comment section, with some people claiming cleaning standards vary depending on chain and the staff. One person wrote: "I work in a luxury hotel and we do clean everything."
However, others backed up what she was saying. One person said: "You're absolutely right, I also worked in hotels and what you say is true." Another added: "After seeing this, no one will laugh at me anymore for bringing my own glasses, towels and flip-flops from home."
